In my job, I enjoy collaborating with other scientists so we can learn from each other and make progress together.
Outside of work, I love playing in concerts. Playing in front of big audiences makes me really nervous and excited. Hopefully we can do that again soon.
Currently in lockdown it’s hard to see people or go to indoor activities, so I like to cycle around Amsterdam seeing what’s up. I sometimes stop by what is rapidly becoming my favourite store now I discovered they have mince pies as well as Lebkuchen (from Germany – Lidl or Aldi should have them, they’re great) and Brezels (the big Germany bread prezels with salt on them). Sometimes I also go out to the big forest outside of town, where there’s a goat farm among other things. I used to play a lot of Sim City when I was younger, so I enjoy seeing how different cities work and ways people design them. If I wasn’t an astronomer I think I’d like to be a city planner – Amsterdam has a lot of very cool stuff on how they design their cycle network, make neighbourhoods safe for kids to play in, etc. It’s not uncommon to see kids playing on their own in the squares because the way the roads are designed makes it much safer. With the lockdown this is starting to happen in the UK, and I hope it does because changing where car traffic goes in a smart way makes it much nicer for everyone, including drivers!
