diameter of the Earth is 12,756 km. Eratosthenes had a good approximation of this over 2000 years ago and was with 1.5 % of the accepted value today.

He worked out the circumference of the earth with a measuring stick and the sun. Eratosthenes’ work has been lost so we’re lucky Cleomedes wrote it down.
