Cancer happens when there’s a mistake in the DNA in a cell which causes it to multiply more quickly and not die (cells in our body usually die fairly regularly). This means that there’s then a build up of these mutated cells which is called a tumour. This tumour can grow and stop the body performing its natural functions which makes you ill
Cancer develops from healthy cells in the body, whose DNA becomes damaged causing them to grow and multiply uncontrollably, as they ignore the cells usual rules on growth. If these cells start spreading out into the surrounding tissue, the cancer is called invasive. If they just stay in one location and are ‘walled in’ by a membrane, they are called in-situ.
