A molecule is more stable the more energy it takes to break it apart. This energy comes from how the electrons around the atoms in the molecules interact, since electrons all have different energy states. Sometimes the number of molecules is stable even if reactions happen, as long as the reactions making the molecule happen as fast as reactions breaking it.
