Plasmas are a gas where electrons are floating freely around it. You can remove electrons from atoms in a bunch of ways. The two ways that happen in space are: the gas gets really hot and collisions between atoms knock electrons off, or high energy ultraviolet light has enough energy to remove electrons from the atoms. Stars several times more massive than our Sun can do this to the gas around them, or even to the voids between galaxies, in a process called “reionisation”.
