We think that the Universe was created 13.8 billion years ago in what scientists call the “Big Bang” – however, this name is slightly misleading as the early Universe wasn’t big and it didn’t go bang! Instead, we think that the Universe started off as a very very very small point called a singularity which then rapidly expanded and grew.

A funny fact about the name “Big Bang” is that it actually started off as a joke – most scientists at the time believed that the Universe had always existed as a constant, generally unchanging object and sarcastically began calling this new theory of a Universe that expanded from nothing the “Big Bang”. In the end, the name stuck and now most scientists believe this is the best theory that we have to describe the start of the Universe.
