We don’t know for certain, but the most likely source is through animals (probably either bats or pangolins). There are lots of diseases that exist in animals, which can be passed to humans when we interact with them. It’s thought that COVID started in a food market in Wuhan, China, where lots of live animals were being kept — this was one of the first places to have an outbreak of COVID, although now it’s found all over the world.
Covid-19 is one type of coronavirus that has only developed recently. It happened when another type of coronavirus that was in bats mutated (changed) so that it could infect humans.
